What is a Favicon
Well it’s a small image 32 x 32, also known as a shortcut image, and it should be used as part of your overall website branding. The small image appears in the title tab of the web browser being used to view your website next to your web page title. You may think its not important and no will notice it. These days people tend to have many windows open within their browser and having this small Favicon image in the tab allows people to easily switch back to your website. They are also very useful when customers come to book mark your website and helps with the overall branding of your site.
How to generate a Favicon image
There are quite a few websites out there that will allow you to quickly and easily generate a Favicon image from any image you have and hold the rights for, the one I recommend is http://www.favicon.co.uk/. Just choose the image you wish to use and this website will convert it for you.
How to add a Favicon image to your website.
Once you have created your Favicon image, you can simply upload it to your website by FTP and store it in the root directory. All you then need to do is add a little bit of HTML code to your header file if you’re running a HTML based website, (see below). Most website builder platforms, such a Weebly or 1&1 have a tool in the control panel that allows you to do this and if you’re using WordPress you can install this handy little plug-in, and it will make the whole job simple.
Add the following code within the head section of your header or static page.
<link rel=”icon” href=”favicon.ico”type=”image/x-icon” />
<link rel=”shortcut icon”href=”favicon.ico” type=”image/x-icon” />
